Welcome to your website.

This site has been developed by Arthur Todd (Lost Katanning) for the Nyabing Historical Society Inc. to record the history of Nyabing. The people, the places and the groups that have helped develop Nyabing from the hardships and isolation of its earliest days at the turn of last century through to today. Most of the information on these pages was collected for the Nyabing Centenary celebrations by the people of Nyabing.

Nyabing is a small but important town in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. The name is of Aboriginal origin and is thought to derive from the Aboriginal word “ne-yameng” which is the name of an everlasting flower Rhodanthe manglesii. The first Europeans to visit the area were sandalwood cutters and the first lease taken in the area was by settler John Hassell in 1873.

The townsite was planned in 1911 as part of the Great Southern Railway development and the name given to the siding was Nampup. The name Nampup is also Aboriginal in origin and is the name of a local soak. Lots were surveyed later in the year and the town was gazetted in 1912. The name was changed later that year after several complaints that Nampup was too similar to Nannup so the town was renamed to Nyabing. The surrounding areas produce wheat and other cereal crops. The town is a receival site for Cooperative Bulk Handling (Nyabing’s Trevor Badger is a Director of CBH).

A big thank you to the people of Nyabing, especially Alyson Cooper and the members of the Nyabing Historical Society, for trusting me to reproduce much of the information appearing on these Nyabing pages.
It is so important that our history is preserved and made available for future generations. Our rural communities didn’t just appear. They were built by the blood, sweat, and tears of our early pioneers. Pioneers who sold up everything, and left everything and everybody they knew, to forge a new beginning and a better life for them and their families. When they arrived, they arrived to absolutely nothing and miles from anywhere. But they all worked hard, men, women, and children, to create a solid base for our communities of today. So once again, thank you to the Nyabing community for its input into these pages. Ed.
