FARMERS AND SETTLERS ASSC

Farmers and Settlers Assc

As early as 1890 some farming organisations had been formed in WA, with the Wheatgrowers’ Association being formed in 1908. In March 1912 the Farmers and Settlers’ Association was formed – in part as a response to a letter to WA farmers from the Rural Workers’ Union of Australia discussing farm workers’ wages – and merged with the Wheatgrowers’ Association.

The Farmers and Settlers’ Association, together with the Producers’ Union, formed the business Westralian Farmers Ltd (known later as Wesfarmers) in 1913. They also established a new political party, the Country Party, to obtain representation in both state and federal parliaments. (The Country party would ultimately become the National Party of Western Australia and the National Party of Australia.) In 1920, the Farmers and Settlers’ Association changed its name to the Primary Producers’ Association

The Nyabing branch of the Farmers and Settlers Association commenced in 1915.

FARMERS & SETTLERS ASSOCIATION
NYABING.
FARMERS’ INSURANCE UNION.

Sunday Times
7 November 1915 – P6

The secretary reports a pleasant weekend at Nyabing and Kwobrup where two of the strongest branches in the Katanning electorate were formed with over 40 members at Nyabing and 28 at Kwobrup. The farmers in these districts are ardent co-operators, and are also fully alive to the need of political representation.

The following extract from an insurance dodger of theirs will give an idea as to the initiative and energy of this up-to-date community:
“That a union be formed to be called the Farmers’ Insurance Union; that similar rates and charges be made as those existing today under the insurance tariff. Premiums to be paid into a trust account, and these funds to be invested according to the resolution of the company. No payments to be made prior to an arranged settling day.

The committee shall meet on such settling day and decide the amounts of claims due and if the insurance fund is sufficient to pay each claim in full. If the fund is insufficient to pay in full, a pro rata payment will be made exhausting the funds, and the claimants’ shall give à receipt in full, and no further claim can be made on the association.

That a sum sufficient for the putting of this insurance agreement into legal form be deducted from the first premiums or out of the subsequent premiums. When the funds have reached an amount considered to be a substantial and safe capital, the interest on this capital invested shall be used to pay in full, with interest added, any claims that the funds were previously insufficient to meet. Perhaps this will bring to light many of our branches who are interested in co-operative insurances.”

The secretary of the Nyabing branch of the Farmers’ and Settlers’ Association recently wrote to the general secretary, Mr. H. E. Stanistreet, stating that the branch had carried the following resolution in connection with the cost of bread:
“The Nyabing branch of the Farmers’ and Settlers’ Association are entirely in sympathy with those members of the Australian Labour Federation who propose to reduce the price of bread by means of co-operative baking, and it will be glad to support them with its produce when the opportunity offers.”
