FRANCHI Tony Chrissie

Franchi Tony Chrissie. Franchi Tony Chrissie.

From April 1995

We came to Nyabing with the Galah (it’s 24 years old now) in 1995 to take-over the Nyabing Inn. We had looked at Pingrup and a couple of others and saw the Nyabing Inn advertised in the paper and rang up about it.

Nyabing wasn’t new to us as my Dad was here in the 70’s and put the telephone cable through. My youngest sister and Christine Hobley were great friends and Tony’s sister Terry had worked at the pub.

Our life became the pub. On our first night in Nyabing, Dixie Beattie saw an animal of some kind run in front of her when she was heading home from the pub and drove into Faye’s Shop. Dixie and the car were okay but the shop needed a lot of repairs!

Tony and I had four daughters being Toni, Natalie, Margie and Tanya. Roxanne was the only grandchild when we moved to Nyabing. She was followed by Dustilee, Kaleb, Summah, Darcee, Imogen and a few years later Ella and Molly. Now that the grandies are teenagers, they would have loved us to still of had the pub as many happy times we had there.

Over the years there were many great times and some sad and also hard ones. I think of the Bay 13 Church Service where money was raised for St John Ambulance. Melbourne Cup was a great day with bets, sweeps, food and of course drinks! Hens Nights, Bucks Nights and birthdays celebrating 18th’s – 60th’s, these were all good fun.

The second Saturday in December was the Christmas Tea, Wednesday nights were “Jackpot” and Thursday nights were Darts night. Head Shaves for Cancer was held once a year in March. All the change ever left on the bar was put in the local ambulance donation tin which added up to quite a few thousand dollars. All the cans that were recycled went to the Nyabing Primary School.

Each year we had a tea for the sporting teams. Boy, Thursday nights after football, netball and hockey training were busy, steak sandwiches, chips and pepper sauce being the favourite! Tony was a great cook. If sport was held away everyone came back to the pub for a meal, drinks and a chat. Then there was bowls and cricket in the summer. When bowls won a grand final all the hair came off and it is still in a plastic bag!! Netballers also had great times, hockey and footballers; they partied for a week when they won the grand final!

Even though we don’t have the pub anymore we still live in town and see all the young ones that were once single are married now with families, which is lovely to see. We love living in Nyabing and enjoy the lifestyle.
