1914 – 2012

Written by Roy Edward Jury

The Jury family originated from South Australia. Roy’s grandfather, Roy Melville Jury and wife Florence, had followed Roy’s brother William (who later went into the Police Force) to Nyabing in the year 1914. They both worked for the Manuel family before they took up their own farm on Kuringup Road. (Roy’s Great Grandmother – Mrs H. Jury – Obituary)

Roy and Flo were both very community minded and served on district committees such as the Nyabing Agricultural Society, Road Boards/Shire Councillor, and both were foundation members of the Nyabing Golf Club. Before they retired to Bremer Bay in 1954, they bought prime river frontage overlooking the estuary and the ocean. Most of which is still in the family today. Roy and Flo raised a family of seven in their time on the farm; Allen, Derrick, Jean, Athol, Ronda, Merle and Stan. Stan taking over the Kuringup farm when Roy and Flo retired to Bremer.

Stan married Evelyn Trott. When they sold the farm, they moved into Nyabing and spent quite a few years there, before retiring to Mandurah. The Kuringup Farm was purchased by Mike and Janet Darwood and when they retired a few years ago, it was purchased by Ross and Heather Mills. Ross’s mother Joan, being William Jury’s daughter, so the farm still has the family connection.

Allen and Derrick moved to Perth, married, and both had families with which we all still keep in touch. Jean married Tom Deacon (a Pingrup farmer) and raised Glenda, Maureen, Ronda and Melville. They are a very close family.

Roy and Flo’s other daughters Ronda and Merle, both served in the army during WW2. Ronda married Gerry Morphew, and they had three children; Trevor, Kerryn and Gerald. Gerry was an electrician and died at work. Ronda then married John Burns and they had Julie and Douglas. Merle married Charlie Ferguson and they had the one son, Gary who died as the result of a car accident.

Athol, my father, bought a farm south of Roy and Flo’s in 1939 from Bill Batt (originally from Blundy’s). The farm name was to be called “Gnowcrelup” (after the gully that runs through it) but Roy and Flo registered it as “Tobruk” as Athol was serving there in the army during WW2 in the Middle East. Athol was injured in the fighting and was shipped home to recover. He was nursed back to health by Jessie Speight. They married and moved on to the farm, Tobruk.

Athol and Jessie had eight children; Norman born 1944, Roy 1946, Ian in 1948, Jessie 1949, Lloyd 1950, Beverley 1951, Heather 1954 and Peter 1959. Interesting times they were growing up and developing the farm which was only partially cleared. Dad (Athol) was hard working and provided for all of us off a small acreage. The wool boom in the fifties set him up to build a new house (1953), then a new shearing shed and machinery shed. He shut down the old workshop where we swung on the handle to operate the forge. This was where Lloyd lost his two front teeth. The oxy acetylene and electric welders made life a lot easier.

1956: District helping put the crop in.

Athol’s health suffered from his war injuries, and in 1956 he came down with pneumonia at seeding time and the districts people rallied around and put the crop in. I remember the occasion and have a photo of seven tractors and seeders’ working. He thought about retirement after that episode and started building a house in Bremer Bay – next to Roy and Flo, and moved down there in 1965 taking Beverley, Heather and Peter with them. Jessie lived with the Treasure family in Nyabing.

Jessie, Roy’s mother, was born in Bassendean and was always a staunch Swan Districts supporter! Her life on the farm was very busy with eight kids coming fairly quickly, but when Athol helped reform the Nyabing Golf Club, she played on special days. When they moved to Bremer, they helped form the Golf and Bowling Clubs down there, and supported them until late in life.

Athol and Jess both enjoyed their fishing and helped Beverly and Alf with the salmon fishing on Dillon Bay. While we worked on the farm, we would have bottled fish to see us through each year.

Norman and I took over the farm in 1963, having purchased a new ground block to the east and another block to the west. Our working days were logging bush, ploughing, burning bush, picking mallee roots and weeds, working sheep, fencing and on weekends, sports and hot rods.

Norman married Gloria Harvey, whose parents Phil and Audrey farmed at Kwobrup, and they had two sons; Duane and Michael (Mick). Duane married Leanne Walters in 1993. They have two sons, Jake and Luke who are both starting out in the workforce. Mick married Leonie Foster and they have three daughters; Gemma, Amy and Jessie, two working and Jessie still at school

I married Lorraine Bell from Woodanilling; her parents were farming there as well. We have two children; Matthew and Kate. Matt has been working in Singapore since 2005 for a Danish environmental company and enjoys that. Kate married John Furphy and they currently farm at East Pingrup. They have three daughters Camryn, Georgia and Amber.

Ian was Athol and Jessie’s third child. He joined the army and served in Vietnam, before returning and marrying Heather Eden from Adelaide. They worked and lived in Nyabing before moving to Albany, where they worked for an earth moving contractor. They raised three daughters; Adele, Karen and Vicki. Adele married Gary Piroshco and is living in Vancouver, Canada. Karen is a world traveller, and Vicki married Richard Doak and they have a son Jack, and a daughter Emma.

The first of Athol and Jessie’s daughters, Jessie married Alby Webster (who died 1998). She and partner Rod Castiglioni have a son Aaron.

Lloyd married Christine Thomson (another local girl), and they had two children; Joshua and Cassandra. Josh is farming at Pingrup with Lloyd and Christine. He married Renae Male and they have three daughters; Gianna, Eliza and Alexis. Cassandra and partner John McKinney, live in Margaret River with their two sons Harper and Otis.

Beverly married Alfred Sharp a professional fisherman and they have the salmon fishing licence for Dillon Bay beach. They have a daughter Debbie and twin sons, Terry and Greg who are fishermen also. Debbie and ex-partner Jock Gravestock have three sons Arron, Dylan and Jason.

Heather married Grantley Smith and they still farm at Nyabing. They have three children; Rachel, Mark and Fiona. Rachel married Ty Kirby and is farming at Beacon with their daughter Anastasia. Mark married/divorced Bree Graham and now with partner Simone is living in Perth with two sons Xavier and Angelo. Fiona married Nathan Rutherford in 2011, and they live in Perth with Fiona’s daughter Jaide.

Athol and Jessie’s youngest son Peter married Maureen Akse (dec). Peter worked in Albany and now lives in Perth with partner Sue Parkes. Peter has three sons and a daughter. Clinton and Sarah have a son Blake, Jeremy and Jen have a son Jordan and two daughters Madison and Lirael. Bradley and Nat have two daughters Jasmine and Shayleece, and Lisa and Hayden are expecting.

When Roy and Flo retired to Bremer, they took on the Royal Flying Doctor Service Base and had a radio and medical service. They moved into Bethshan Nursing Home in the early 1980’s, where they completed their final days. Athol died in 2000 and Jessie in 2006. A sad occasion, but both lead such full and interesting lives.

Notes from Duane and Michael Jury:

Duane and Mick both went to Narrogin Agricultural School and it was expected in those days that they would eventually take over the family farm. Roy and Lorrie left the farm partnership early due to her decline in health, leaving Norm and the boys to continue on the farm. In June 2001, Norman passed away, and Duane and Mick have continued to run the farm ever since. Gloria has since retired to Bremer Bay. Duane and Mick continue the farming tradition by trading as NC & RE Jury.
