Nyabing Turf Club
[wptb id=6379]c1921-1975
Written by Michael Patterson
The Nyabing Turf Club commenced in 1921, however, the Minute Books appear to be missing. Bill Hobley was one of the founding members of the club. Due to this, we are uncertain as to the beginnings of the Race Club, but below is a copy of the 1921 Fundraiser Dance Card. The Race Club folded about 1975, due to insufficient nominations for the Annual Race Meeting, reduced TAB funding and alterations to the track.
In earlier times, foot races used to be held as well, in between the horse races. These were part of the State Championships and were a handicap 100 yards event. The track was where the change rooms and Guides Hut/Tote stand now. WAFL League Footballers often participated – Mal Atwell for example.
The Horse Races were part of a circuit, which included Pingrup, Katanning, Kojonup and, I think, Lake Varley. Pingrup and Kojonup still have an Annual Race Meeting.
When the Club folded, there was still about $2500 in the Bank. Locals had donated funds to the Club throughout the years so, at the Clubs final meeting, President Noble Patterson, Secretary Michael Patterson and committee members decided to buy a cool room for the Nyabing Pavilion with the money. It is now 2011 and the cool room has only recently been upgraded, proving to be a valuable asset.

My late father George Newbey floated horses to Nyabing, Pingrup, Lake Grace etc. every year. As he held a trainers licence and an amateur jockeys licence he was able to train and ride at these races. He rode & trained many a winner at these venues.
