I started Junior Youth Group for boys and girls in years 3/4/5 after Brownie Guides closed in 2003. Youth Group for seniors (years 6/7) started in 2004 after Junior Red Cross closed. Meetings are held once a month on different days. The main activities the children do are indoor cooking, craft and games. Games included Poison Lollies, North, South, East, West. Quizzes, playing cards, board games, and numbers on the floor are just a few.

Cooking included making pikelets and eating them with plenty of butter, honey, sugar and lemon juice. Cooking marshmallows over a candle or dipping in melted chocolate, then 100’s and 1000s. Making fondue and dipping fruit in. Decorating plain biscuits. Cooking cake in ice-cream cones in the microwave. Icing cake competition (seniors).

I have had wonderful help from the mothers; Bonnie, Chrissie, Cheryl, Pauline in the past few years and many more before that. Thank you all.

The Senior Youth Group went to a roadhouse in Katanning or Dumbleyung for their breakup at the end of the year. These dinners are a lot more casual than the Red Cross dinners were. Now, in 2011, I am only running a Senior Youth Group for children in years 5/6/7.

In 2005 there were only three year seven boys in Youth Group, Jayde, Drew and Kent (no children in year 6). I told them if they were good, I would still run Youth Group for them. They were three of the best behaved boys and were great fun to work with. They liked to do a bit of cooking or craft and then would pull a pack of cards out of their pocket and say let us play cards for the rest of the day. We taught each other different games.

I am now in my twilight years and haven’t quite the energy I had, so working with youth in Nyabing is coming sadly to an end. When I leave, it will be with the most wonderful and happy memories of working with the children of Nyabing. Thank you to all the parents and helpers for all your support over the years.

To the children, THANK YOU for being such a great bunch to work with, and I hope you will always have good memories of your time at whichever group you were involved in, as I will always cherish my time working with you.

Junior Red Cross (JRC) was a part of the school program run by Mrs Lesley Langley with her year 4/5 class. After Mrs Langley left the school, I was asked if I would be interested in running the group after school for the older children, as I was no longer running Girl Guides for the older girls.

I placed a notice in the school newsletter advertising a meeting for children in years 6/7 and parents to see if there was any interest. Thinking no boys would be interested, I got quite a surprise when all the boys came running in and no girls to be seen anywhere. When I asked where the girls were, they said still at school, they are not interested. The boys told me they had a better idea than starting a JRC Group, would I start a Boy Scout Group for boys only. After quite a lively discussion with the boys telling me why I could and me telling them why I couldn’t, they reluctantly agreed to be part of the JRC Group with the girls.
