2006 – Current

Written by Tina Paridaens

Chris was born in Port Augusta, South Australia, to Dutch parents and Tina was born in Whangerai, New Zealand. Chris and Tina Paridaens came to Nyabing in 2006 with their two children Jessie and Drew, from Mount Barker WA, where they had a small cattle stud, breeding Australian Low Line. Chris, a Mechanic by trade also worked with the Shire of Plantagenet. In 2006 a position was advertised at the Shire of Kent for an operator in which Chris applied for and obtained that job. Hence the move to Nyabing.

Due to previously owning mechanical workshops, Chris’ business “Chris’s Repairs’ needed to also be relocated. This meant the purchase of another workshop to move the many machines, tools and vehicles. In July 2006 Chris and Tina purchased the Nyabing Garage, located at 1 Aspendale Street.

Chris started with the Shire of Kent as an operator but later became the Shires mechanic. He did open the Nyabing Garage up for business on the weekends but, with the full time job at the Shire and full time on the weekends, there was no time for family so he closed the doors to the garage. He worked for the Shire for 4 ½ years until March 2011, where he was offered a position at the Forrestaina Nickel Mine (240km from Nyabing).

Massage Therapist

Tina had worked in Mining for over 20 years in the field of Occupational Health and Safety. On moving to Nyabing she decided to follow a long time ambition of opening her own massage salon. After gaining her qualifications she registered her business in 2007 as a massage therapist. She started with a home salon at the residence at 5 George Street, where they were staying at the time, building her clientele. In 2011 the Paridaens moved out to 1362 Datatine road where Tina and Chris built another home salon.

In September 2008 Chris and Tina fell in love with a local property, ‘Kybunga’, located at 1362 Datatine road. This property was owned by local farmers Cathy and Graham Crosby. Chris and Tina approached the Crosby’s to see if they would be interested in subdividing off the homestead block.

Luckily they agreed and the process of learning about subdivisions began. There was a lot of toing and froing from government departments but they all hung in there and basically just went through the motions.

Western Power required the property to be slightly bigger and required eight poles to be removed. Then, after ‘heated’ consultation, the Paridaens ended up having to relocate one pole closer to the homestead and had to put in underground power which was now the requirement for any new subdivision.

The water corp held the paperwork up for about six months (even though there was no scheme water) but eventually, in January 2010, the subdivision became final.

At that point the property was then sold to Chris and Tina. The property size is 10.1 hectares. The sign and name ‘Kybunga’ was relocated to the other side of the Crosby’s farm.

Jessie Paridaens went to Katanning Senior High School and, like all local kids, travelled in on the Nyabing bus driven by Judy George. Jessie firstly worked as a vet nurse at the Katanning vet clinic before working at the same mine as Tina as a Geological Technician. She purchased a house in Kondinin.

Drew Paridaens went to Nyabing Primary School and graduated from there in 2008. He then attended Katanning Senior High School, and Judy George was still driving the Nyabing bus. Once the family moved out to 1362 Datatine road (April 2011) the Shire put in a turnaround at the front gate for the school bus to pick Drew up.

Chris and Tina also purchased a property at 9 Cronin Street and renovated the house in preparation for Chris’ parents to move into from Quorn in South Australia. Unfortunately, two weeks before the move Chris’ father passed away. What was meant to be a surprise of a newly renovated house became quite a sad event. Once they attended the funeral in SA they brought Chris’s mother (Ann) to Nyabing by herself. Ann Paridaens struggled with being on her own and her health and well-being slowly deteriorated. In May 2011, Ann or ‘Johanna” as she liked to be called, went to live in a nursing home in Gympie Queensland.

Christmas 2010 saw another member of the Paridaens family become a resident of Nyabing. Demis Hartley, Chris’ nephew arrived. Demis took on the position as serviceman at the Shire of Kent after Chris left in April 2011.

2011 was a busy year for the Paridaens as their daughter Jessie and fiancé Matt Broadhurst also returned to live in Nyabing carrying a new addition to the clan. They moved into the house at 9 Cronin Street. Jessie is booked in to have their baby at the Katanning Regional hospital in April 2012.
