The Kent Districts Pistol Club started in 1987 with the first public meeting called for the new club on 19 August 1987. The meeting was held at the Nyabing RSL Hall. In attendance were Dave Ogle, Geoff Germain, Geoff Foxall, Ron Gordon, Juergen Gossman, Mick Rinaldi, Nigel Frear, Brad Harvey and Brian Spragg.
The first President of the Club, who was elected at a meeting on 19 August, 1987, was Geoff Germain. He went on to serve for three years to 1989. In 1995 he served as Captain and then, in 2001, Geoff took on the bar manager’s role until his untimely death in 2004. The club holds a memorial trophy shoot in his memory at the end of each shooting year and has named the Air Pistol range after him.
The Club’s first working bee was held on 4 November, 1987, which saw members clear a track into the range and cleared the 25 metre ranges. With everyone working flat out all work was completed by 5pm. A second working bee on 12 November, saw the 25 metre ranges ready for police approval.
First Shoot
The first inaugural club shoot on the new range was held on the 22 May 1988. Norm Jury became President in June 1990 till 1992 and was the Bar Manager from 1992 – 2001 before his untimely death in June 2001. In the same year that Norm became Bar Manager, Gloria Jury took on the task of Secretary from 1993 and held the position till the end of the 1998 season. From 2002 onwards the club has held a memorial trophy shoot to remember Norm, and named the bar area after him. The memorial shoot is held in June with a centre fire the match contested. Both Norm and Gloria became Life Members of the club on 10 November 1996.
Life Members
Up to 2011 the Kent Districts Pistol Club had bestowed Life Membership status to Norm Jury, Gloria Jury, Richard Hobley, Dave Ogle, and Barry Ramm for their service to the ongoing success of the club.
Club Champions
Richard Hobley was the first club champion in 1988. In 1999 Barry Ramm took out the title followed by Lex Porebski in 1990 – 1991. From 1992 to the present 2011 club year, Jeff Hobley has been the club champion.
Club Facilities
The club house as we know it today was finished by 1997 when we held our first Open Championships. The first Open Championship was sanctioned by Western Australian Pistol Association (WAPA) and was held in 1997. Prior to that date the club held invitation shoots. The biggest Open to date saw 82 shooters over two and half days from all over the State.
The club now has three 25 metre ranges, one 50 metre, a 100 metre and 200 metre ranges as well as a 10 metre indoor range for Air Pistol.
Two members to date have been in the State WAPA Team Squad; Derek Stock and Brian Copeland. Several members of the club have, over the years, shot at various Open Shoots including State and National Championships. The club has been successful in numerous team events and individual events while competing at other clubs.
Terry and Jeff Hobley have both been on the committee since 1990 carrying out various tasks. The club shoots Sunday afternoons and offers six pistol matches: Centre Fire, Free Pistol, Standard Pistol, Rapid Fire Air Pistol and Black Powder.
Would anyone have any photographs of the Kent Districts Pistol Club that they would be prepared to share?
