I like to think of us as similar to the “Tumbleweed”.  Over the years Terry and I have rolled like the tumbleweed from place to place but always we seem to return to Nyabing. The Urqhuarts’ first lived in the Kent Shire in 1978 on a farm at Pingrup. It was suggested to Terry to come over to WA and learn dryland farming. Terry was from the Riverina, NSW, and I a Sydney Girl. We originally planned to stay for five years!

So we packed the car, box trailer with all our worldly goods, three small children,Rachel (5), Sarah (4), and Justin (2) plus a cat that jumped out and disappeared in South Australia. We arrived on a hot February afternoon and experienced our first appreciation for the “Albany Doctor”. We lived in a two room shed within a larger machinery shed, thirty kilometres out of Pingrup. Due to a very dry year our stay was cut short and we moved on.

Eventually we returned in 1995 through to 1997 to live at the Nyabing Pastoral Company where Terry was Assistant Manager at the Piggery. We were there two years and had a very busy work life and social life that included me becoming involved with the Pingrup Potters. I would travel out with a group of friends once a week.

Our next return to the area was in 2001 when Terry accepted the position as Manager of the Weymss Seed Works, fifty kilometres south east of Nyabing. We remained there for two years, often coming to Nyabing to visit family and friends. Once again I joined with the happy group at the potter’s shed.

In 2010 we returned with Terry taking up a truck driver’s job with the Kent Shire. The decision was made easier because of the fact that our son Justin had by this time married local girl Erin Germain and, with our daughter Sarah in Esperance, it brought us closer to our grandchildren. Our eldest daughter Rachel had married and moved to NSW with her family.

By now it was obvious to Terry and I that Nyabing was an ideal choice for us as we approach retirement. We enjoy living here. We find it central for our needs, quiet and safe. People are friendly and welcoming and the climate suits us! With all this in mind we are in the process of designing and planning to build a new house in the town where the “Tumbleweeds” stop.
